Faye Hueston was born in a Salvation Army Home for Unwed Mothers in Los Angeles, California. Adopted at 18 months, she was raised in a home of affluence as the daughter of Fanchon of Fanchon and Marco, the foremost producers of musical revues in the ’20s and ’30s. Bing Crosby, Myrna Loy and Judy Garland were some of the performers who got their start in a Fanchon & Marco revue. Fanchon also became the first woman film producer in Hollywood in the 1930s. Faye grew up in the Hollywood of the ’30s, becoming a film actress herself in the 1940s. However, she was always more interested in writing and books. In her forties, while living in England, Faye embarked on a search for her birth parents, whose names she had discovered on her original birth certificate. Since the relationship with her adoptive father had been difficult, it was her birth father she most wanted to find. A friend sent her to the foremost medium in England, who told her that her father was dead, that he had been an alcoholic, and that he was filled with remorse for what he had done to Sarah. Three years later she found her birth mother through clues that came from the same medium. “Sarah” was the name of her birth mother, whom her father had abandoned when she became pregnant. None of this did Faye want to be true. Months later, her private investigator’s report confirmed the medium’s clairvoyance. Saved from the cruelties of the Depression, Faye was adopted by two loving parents into a home of wealth and privilege. Her adoptive mother was the famous Fanchon of 'Fanchon and Marco'. You have probably never head of Fanchon but in the 1920s her name was esteemed by millions of Americans; Fanchon was literally a household name. As the story unfolds of Faye's upbringing surrounded by glamour, sophistication and endless celebrities one can't help but feel as you turn the pages that you have unearthed a Hollywood secret.
But first, a little insight into Fanchon and Marco:
Fanchon and Marco were a hugely successful theatrical firm. The brother and sister team produced live shows with rows of chorus girls, tap dancers and crooners donned in lavish costumes as they performed on spectacular theatrical sets. Audiences loved the live song and dance musical revues and the constant variety of performing acts. The F&M revues commanded large audiences, the theaters were packed.
In 1933 Fanchon and Marco opened a theatrical school training budding stars like Bill Crosby, Cyd, Charisse, Judy Garland to name but a few. It was a time of wannabes trying to make it to the top and Fanchon’s drive to help them succeed.
The author is candid about her upbringing amidst the fame and glamour in the heady heydays of the 20s and 30s, and the relationship with her adoptive parents Fanchon and Bill. She adored her mother who was glamourous, energetic, artistic, gentle and loving. Her father Bill was a larger than life, cigar-smoking, and hugely successful restaurateur. But one can’t help but feel sympathetic towards Faye Hueston as she battled with the strictness that her father imposed upon her childhood exuberance, wanting her own identity and railing against her famous mother putting her in the spotlight.
Faye Hueston’s search for her birth parents takes an interesting twist when she turns to a famous British psychic. I’ll save the suspense for when you read it. It made my eyes wide open.
The book is not only a story about the authors life, adoption and search for her birth parents, it’s a story of the author’s advancement into movies, ritzy glamour and fame, love and turmoil, sadness and pain, disappointments and humiliation, grit and determination.
I particularly liked the book as it gives fascinating insights into an era long gone by. It was a gift and it really is a good read. Lots of great pictures in the book.

Faye Hueston examines her life without fear. How many of us could face up to who we are, and how we got to be who we are with such honesty and compassion? Very few, I think. And it's a great story, a great read.
This is a well written biography that reads like a novel, as the layers of history, intrigue, and exploration continue to unfold. The author, born of humble beginnings, was given up to adoption as a toddler by her birth mother, and then wound up living the life of a Hollywood princess in every sense of the word. The trappings of success that were provided by her adoptive parents, one a theatrical pioneer and the other a successful restaurateur, had her firmly planted in a world of luxury, privilege and adventure.
However, despite the material wealth, Faye Hueston was haunted by an inner longing to discover her roots and inner self.
The reader is provided with an inside look at the lives of the rich and famous in the 1920’s through the 1940’s as Faye recounts her experiences with the stars, her own acting career, and the personal struggles she faced along the way. The detective part of the story begins when she follows her inner calling to uncover the identity of her birth parents. Part of this search includes multiple visits to an extraordinary English medium that provided invaluable evidence that ultimately led Faye to her targets. The discovery of her birth parents, one who was deceased and the other who was very much alive, was filled with a myriad of emotions that ranged from despair to elation.
This memoir chronicles a life that has been well lived, and continues to evolve. The author should have embarked on her writing career much earlier, as she is clearly gifted. Speaking as one who does not typically read memoirs, I can honestly say that I could not put this book down, as I was drawn by Faye’s insights, wit, and compassion. I’m sure you will agree.
