Before borders were drawn, before treaties were signed,
before wars were waged anew,
before the great kingdoms of the Remnant were even born
and the world of old was only a hazy slate of memory told in story and legend,
a girl and her family fought to survive. And that girl’s name was Morrighan.

In Morrighan, a prequel novella to Mary E. Pearson's The Remnant Chronicles, a girl and a boy from enemy camps meet, fall in love--and set history in motion.

Morrighan A Remnant Chronicles Novella The Remnant Chronicles eBook Mary E Pearson

Love, LOVE, Love this beautifully woven novella of prevailing love amidst the violent, harrowing wilds that claim the Remnant, who roam in search of safety and food. Including the Scavengers, who pillage to survive. Kindness in an unkind world frames the moral story in poetic, scintillating prose. The words fairly shimmer off the page, they are so beautiful!

I highly recommend the prequel novella, Morrighan, to all fans of The Remnant Chronicles as well as to those who wish to dip their toes into this magnificent world before submerging themselves in the main novels.

Morrighan A Remnant Chronicles Novella The Remnant Chronicles eBook Mary E Pearson Reviews

This was a great Novella. In The Remnant Chronicles, you read bits and pieces of The Last Testaments of Gaudrel and Morrighan Book of Holy Text. Get little snippets of Morrighan but this novella really gives you a good grasp at how it was back in the day. What really happened to Morrighan and her leading the way to the land of bounty.

There is a lot of Lia in Morrighan, when you read it. You can see similarities.

In the small amount of pages, a lot happen. It is a love story, a story of loss, a story of beginnings and learning. It helps you understand the history and ties The Last Testaments of Gaudrel and Morrighan Book of Holy Text more together.
I loved, loved, loved this story! For those who haven’t read books 1 and 2 of the Remnant Chronicles, please read this book. Pearson gives us a glimpse into the history of the world in which the Remnant Chronicles are set. The story of Morrighan and the boy she falls in love with… I don’t usually use this word to describe a romance, but “magical” immediately comes to mind. Readers get a bit of the fantasy involved in the series along with the romance that keeps you thrilled and glued to the pages. If I have any criticism, it’s that I wish there was more! Yes, I know it is a novella, but the ending seemed to rush more than it should have. It wouldn’t have hurt to add a few pages of detail about “the journey”. In the end, we get a satisfying conclusion, and for those who have yet to read it, a great introduction into the Remnant Chronicles. I cannot wait for the third/final book of the series this August!
Morrighan is the prequel to The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E. Pearson. In this novella, we follow Morrighan and Jafir. Morrighan is a girl from the Remnant, possessing the power of the knowing, while Jafir is a boy from the Scavengers. . .

Other books in this series include
The Kiss of Deception (#1)
The Heart of Betrayal (#2)
The Beauty of Darkness (#3)

In this short little read, we see through the eyes of both of these characters and what is to become of them living in a time where survival is everything.

Disclaimer I have not yet read the three books to the main series this novella is based around, though I do plan to pick those up soon. With that being said, my review might differ from someone who has already been immersed in this world, and knows more of the story at hand and why it might be important.

To start off, I really did enjoy Pearson's writing style. This is the first of her work that I have read, but I am impressed. There is something graceful about the way that she builds a world. Her characters jump from the pages so soon, making it easy to care for them and become invested in their trials as they develop throughout the pages.

I wont include spoilers here (it's such a short novella), so I can't go too far into plot. If this was a standalone novella, I would feel as if the plot were a bit too average. Two opposing tribes, a forbidden friendship, what happens now? But, I will leave this judgement be until I've read the series itself, as I understand this novella to serve the purpose of adding background to an already existing story arc.

I gave this novella a 4 star review mainly because of the resolution. It had the ending that I wanted, but in the slightest sense. I wanted more. I felt the lead-up overshadowed the ending. For me, the last climax of this novella was dismissed in two sentences. And Morrighan's gift of the knowing seemed like little more than a strong sense of intuition -- perhaps another thing served better by having read the mains series.

In conclusion, I'm glad I read this and I'm even more interested in picking up The Remnant Chronicles soon (I already have the ebook of Kiss of Deception). I find it hard to not recommend novellas like this. Nice, quick reads that only serve to deepen an understanding.

If you're interested in the series, or have already read it, I'm sure you wont regret picking this one up.
Morrighan is of the Remnants, a tribe of mostly women who live a nomadic life in an effort to keep themselves safe from the Scavengers. Before the story is set a woman disappears from the tribe, Venda, and there are differing theories as to what happened (kidnapped! Killed! Wandered off!) tho Morrighan's grandmother, Ama (the oldest of the tribe) has her version of the tale.

By accident Morrighan meets a young Scavenger boy, Jafir, who on their first meeting shows her mercy, on their second scorn and on their third curiosity. His people live by stealing from other tribes, though Jafir himself is very capable at hunting and gathering. But he's low man on the totem pole so he more or less just tries to stay out of his elder brother Steffan and their father Fergus' way.

Morrighan and Jafir's lives entwined briefly throughout the years until finally the two find themselves in a close enough proximity that the curiosity they both held for the other won out of their tribal prejudices (also books help pave the way) and whatever survival instinct they probably should possess.

Told in alternating chapters you can see the bones of the legend/prophecy that rules so much of Lia's time in the series proper, but at the same time its a little difficult to understand WHY. Hence my image up top. Though maybe you prefer Xena's song "Hate is the Star" from The Bitter Suite? (protip readers don't trust anyone who doesn't like this episode or relate to at least one of the songs in some way).
