I don't own the displayed edition, I own the 1968 edition published by the U of Oklahoma. If you're not familiar with the Latin elegiac poets this volume is a superb entry. Notes are copious, informative, and not overly intrusive. The selections are representative of the poets, with generous servings from each author.The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I have trouble with KPH's occasional editorializing. His reference to the Ars Amatoria as "this weapon for evil" is too much, and his assessment of Catullus reveals more of Harrington's prudery. Fortunately his attitudes don't affect his scholarship, and I do not hesitate to recommend this book (at least the earlier versions) to any serious student.
